Pietro Maschio Distillery

Pietro Maschio Distillery

Type of activity: Grappa production

Getting Form

Distillation has always been the main activity of the Maschio family. The first to start was the great-grandfather Francesco in the distant years 1880/1885, a pioneer who then handed down art and secrets to the grandfather Pietro who developed the occasional and craft work to a real commercial activity until the day of the death of the great-grandfather Francesco. Pietro Maschio in 1948 transferred the business from the province of Treviso to Verona, establishing the distillery in Monteforte d'Alpone, where it still is; in this new adventure he was helped by his sons Francesco and Giuseppe. In those years, and in the years to follow, Francesco and Giuseppe, guided by Pietro's expertise, have continuously refined the art of distillation, developing their own market in the province of Verona and in Veneto, a market based almost exclusively on the distribution of Venetian grappa to the myriad of small food stores existing at the time. Little by little, the market changed and Francesco and Giuseppe begun to distill pomace of only selected vines, such as Amarone, Valpolicella, Soave, Recioto di Soave, Chardonnay, thus obtaining superior quality distillates, so-called monovarietal. Now the distillery is managed by the three brothers Fabio, Stefano and Enrico and their cousin Roberto, but always guided by the experience and wisdom of their fathers.

Interview with Enrico Maschio

What is your role in the company?
I am the owner together with my brothers and my cousin.

When did you start collaborating with Farina?
At least 20 years ago, because before us our parents and the Farina family already used to work together. We are the fourth generation of distillers.

What products are supplied to the company?
Bottled Grappa. We collect the marc from their production and transform it. We are at the same time suppliers and customers of the Farina company.

How is your grappa produced?
Grappa is the final result of the distillation of the marc, which is, in short, the by-product of winemaking. By means of the steam we extract the alcohol content of the raw material of the marc, through a process that uses steam and heat exchange. The alcohol is then extracted and separated through the distillation column and the pure grappa is obtained, at 80 degrees, which will then be treated according to the refining processes required.

What is your philosophy?
We praise slowness, we follow the rhythms set by nature, the timing of the harvest of fresh marcs, those of distillation with the traditional method. We prefer the little but good, we do not listen to the demands of the market, but to the "nose" of our master distillers. Few marcs that we collect from small D.O.C. producers and that following interpretations and not automations, are transformed at each new season into grappa of superior quality.

What is your favorite Farina product?
I am a lover of Valpolicella Superiore and Ripasso, I think they are wines that adapt to all occasions.
What evaluation would you give to Farina?
Excellent, I feel good both as a customer and as a supplier. This also thanks to the great business partnership and friendship relation that has been going on for years now.

What does it mean for you to be a supplier of a winery?
Under the business partnership, we always try to give our best both in quality and in service, because when someone works well it is then gratified. The best policy is to create a great product and this is what we are always committed to do.
